Local Board Update from Phelan Pirrie, Beekeeping News, Community Calendar, etc
Hives have always been part of our local rural landscape but the increased demand for honey has resulted in larger number of hives in the area. Although this can be extremely beneficial for those of us with orchards and gardens, having most of the colony turn up en masse as a result of swarming can be very alarming. Swarming happens when the old queen and roughly just over half the colony leave the hive to set up elsewhere, leaving the hive with a new or hatching queen.
